Add ESP8266 connectivity to an Arduino-based project using this Wi-Fi shield. It arrives with AT-command firmware, allowing a host to control the wireless device over UART. The shield format provides a bridge between an existing embedded application and network communication without requiring the ESP8266 to replace the main host controller.
